GELY KORZHEV. Back to Venice

From 11 May.

Gely Korzhev (1925-2012) is one of the most eminent figures in the painting scenario, firstly the Soviet one and then the Russian, of the second half of the Twentieth century.

The exhibition, set in the revamped venues of this historic seat of the Venetian university, takes place exactly 57 years after the 31st Venice Biennale, where Korzhev represented one of the most convincing voices of that so-called “severe style” which attempted a way out from the steely canons imposed by the Stalinist era.

Organised thanks to the collaboration between the Tret’jakov Gallery, the Institute of Russian Realist Art and the Studies Centre on the Arts of Russia (CSAR) at Ca’ Foscari, in addition to an important documentary nucleus with photos, screenings and multimedia technologies, the exhibition presents about fifty paintings, arranged in well-defined thematic sections, which will shed new critical light on this artist.
