FROM TITIAN TO RUBENS | Masterpieces from Antwerp and other Flemish collections

An important exhibition (until 1st March 2020), revealing the link between two great schools of painting, the Venetian one and the Flemish one, with a nucleus of rarely loaned masterpieces (some never even displayed to the public). By curator Ben Van Beneden, director of the Rubenshuis in Antwep and set up in what were once the Doge’s apartments, it is presenting 80 paintings including some canvases by Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Michiel Sweerts through ten thematic sections, and other artworks such as drawings, prints, statues and glass, mostly from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts and from the House of Rubens in Antwerp.

Among such sections, one is dedicated to famous Flemish composer Adriaan Willaert, who settled permanently in the Serene Republic, becoming Chapel Master at the Basilica of Saint Mark in 1527, where he founded the acclaimed Venetian School of Music, attended, among others, by Gabrieli and Monteverdi.
