The Fortunys – A family story

From 11 May to 24 November 2019.

As a tribute to the 70th death anniversary of the originally Spanish multi-faceted artist Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo and for the occasion of the 58th Biennale Exhibition, where the artist exhibited often and where a room was dedicated to him together with his son in 1950 inside the Spanish pavilion, the Venice City Museums are dedicating this exhibition, featuring the two best-known Fortunys, to the painter members of the family.

The exhibition thus deals with the two research fields favoured by the Madrazos: painting, firmly established within the European tradition of ancient masters, and the passion for collecting, bringing back into the suggestive venues of their family residence, now a museum-house, some of the items and most important artworks that made up the collection.
