Discover a mesmerizing journey into the realm of art and dreams with “CHAGALL: The Color of Dreams.” Presented by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and curated by Elisabetta Barisoni, this captivating exhibition is set to open on September 30th and will grace the halls of the second floor at the Candiani Cultural Center until February 13th, 2024.

Unveiling the Dreamer’s Palette: CHAGALL’s Artistic Revolution

The exhibition embarks from the iconic “Rabbino n. 2” or “Rabbino di Vitebsk” (1914 – 1922), a masterpiece held within the collections of Ca’ Pesaro Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna and acquired by the City of Venice during the Biennale of 1928. “CHAGALL: The Color of Dreams” seeks to delve into the revolutionary essence of Chagall’s art as a portrayal of dreams and a triumphant celebration of creative imagination.

A Fusion of Masterpieces: Chagall’s Universe Unveiled

This extraordinary showcase intertwines the treasures preserved at Ca’ Pesaro with significant and poignant Chagall works from esteemed international collections. Loans from the Albertina in Vienna, the Musée National Marc Chagall in Nice, the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem come together to weave a tapestry where Chagall connects the dots between artworks and artists who share his artistic ethos.

A Fantastical Odyssey: Exploring the Dreamer’s Path

Chagall’s fantastical journey unfolds through the tapestry of 20th-century art, meticulously segmented into six immersive sections. The odyssey commences with “The Symbolist Dream,” a realm of poetic dreams by Odilon Redon, Cesare Laurenti, and Adolfo Wildt.

A Harmonious Dance of Colors and Emotions

“CHAGALL: The Color of Dreams” further explores themes dear to Chagall’s heart—love and color—aligning the Russian Master’s exploration with the vibrant expressions of European Expressionism, vividly exemplified by the chromatic prowess of Emil Nolde.

A Divine Encounter: Chagall’s Religious Odyssey

A substantial portion of the exhibition is dedicated to Chagall’s religious artworks, especially his illustrations for the Bible commissioned by Ambroise Vollard. The exhibition showcases engravings generously donated by the artist to the Musée National Chagall in Nice in 1972, alongside the precious original plates used for the graphic prints.

Surrendering to Dreams: Chagall’s Lasting Legacy

The biblical and crucifixion themes emanating from Chagall’s vision converge, leading to Symbolist and Primitivist outcomes found in the extraordinary works from Ca’ Pesaro’s collections on display. The theme of the sacred, pivotal in Chagall’s production, unites international artists from diverse painting traditions.

Embracing Fantasy: A Dazzling Finale

The exhibition concludes with a sixth section dedicated to the illogical, instinctive, and joyous realm of fantasy—a testament to Chagall’s enduring legacy. “The Color of Fables” takes inspiration from Chagall’s graphic project on La Fontaine’s Fables, coloring the fantastic visions of George Grosz and the musings of Félicien Rops, Frank Barwig, and Mario De Maria.

Embark on a journey through the vibrant world of Chagall’s dreams at the “CHAGALL: The Color of Dreams” exhibition. From September 30, 2023, to February 13, 2024, experience the transformative power of art and imagination. Explore the exhibit, indulge in the beauty of Chagall’s masterpieces, and surrender to the enchanting allure of the dreamer’s palette.
