Every year for two days in September, Italy participates in the European Heritage Days, the programme promoted since 1991 by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The aim is to emphasize the central role of cultural heritage and to involve communities in its participation.
The festival is coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Culture. State cultural places take part in the project together with numerous non-state museums, municipalities, galleries, foundations and private associations, providing an extremely varied cultural offering, with a calendar that reaches more than a thousand events.
The “GEP – Giornate Europee del Patrimonio” are a remarkable choral event giving an image of the widespread wealth and the diversity of Italian cultural heritage: from the most famous museums and sites to less-known hidden treasures, a lot of places across the Country will open their doors day and night. Their common aim is to celebrate history and cultural identity strengthening the link with respective territories, traditions and communities.
The 2022 European Heritage Days edition will be celebrated in Italy, on 24th and 25th September. The activities will be developed through the common theme “Sustainable Heritage”, presented in the Italian version “Patrimonio culturale sostenibile: un’eredità per il futuro”.
