A Century of Success: Teatro La Fenice and Piazza San Marco
In 1928, an epochal event took place in Venice, at Piazza San Marco, a place recognized by Venetians as the pulsating heart of the city. It was the year when the prestigious Teatro La Fenice conquered the square to offer an incredible evening of performances. On the stage, two operas by the talented Ruggero Leoncavallo, “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci,” were conducted by the great maestro Pietro Mascagni. The success was overwhelming, and the square turned into an open-air theater, surrounded by the majestic Procuratie, the Napoleonic Wing, and the millennia-old Basilica of San Marco.
An Eclectic Array of Performances
From that moment on, Piazza San Marco became the stage for a variety of memorable performances. The Venice Biennale brought internationally acclaimed artists such as Merce Cunningham and Maurice Béjart, along with the renowned Bolshoi Ballet from Moscow. Even rock icons like Paul McCartney and Sting enchanted the audience with unforgettable concerts. In 2020 and 2022, Teatro La Fenice once again shone on the square, delivering thrilling performances of Carmina Burana, conducted by the maestro Fabio Luisi.
Unforgettable Moments Ahead
This year as well, the “most beautiful salon in the world” will continue to enchant the audience with a series of extraordinary events. The celebrated Italian singer Laura Pausini will perform in a series of three concerts, five years after her last album received the Latin Grammy, offering moments of pure emotion on June 30, July 1, and 2.
But it doesn’t end there. Teatro La Fenice will amaze once again with an exceptional performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, conducted by the Slovak maestro Juraj Valčuha and performed by the Theater’s Orchestra and Chorus. This unmissable concert is scheduled for July 8 and promises to touch the deepest strings of the spectators’ souls.
Finally, closing this extraordinary series of events will be the talented Italian singer-songwriter Paolo Conte. Fresh from his great success at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Paolo Conte will bring his beloved and refined style to Piazza San Marco, providing the audience with an unforgettable evening.
These performances, precious as gemstones embedded in the heart of Venice, will remain forever engraved in the memories of those fortunate enough to attend. A century of success, a century of magic, and still many stories to be written on this extraordinary open-air stage.
